Neck Pain Treatment

Neck Pain Treatment with Our Birmingham Chiropractor

According to research available at the National Institute of Health, 23% of the population on average experiences neck pain. Thanks to modern technology and our propensity to hunch over our desks, computers, and smartphones, this number could be significantly higher. At the Birmingham Wellness Center, our team can help you find relief from your neck pain without relying on medications or invasive procedures. Perhaps more importantly we can also help you prevent it from occurring in the first place.

Neck Pain

What's Causing That Pain in Your Neck?

Neck pain has frequently associated symptoms--including stiffness, achy muscles, shoulder/arm pain, headaches, and/or TMJ dysfunction—which can occur for a variety of reasons. Research appears to suggest that the prevalence of this condition is higher among women, people who live in urban areas, and people who live in higher-income countries.

Some of the most frequently cited causes and/or risk factors of neck pain include:

  • Poor posture and body mechanics at work, compounded by excessive sitting in front of a computer or desk
  • "Text neck," a newly coined phrase to describe the forward flexed/hunched over position we assume when using our cell phones
  • Direct or indirect trauma often sustained during sport or in a car accident (especially whiplash, when the head snaps rapidly forward and back)
  • Chronic degenerative changes in the spine, including arthritis, spinal stenosis, disc bulge or herniation, and nerve entrapment

Stress can also increase a person's likelihood of experiencing neck pain. If you smoke or have poor nutrition, the ligaments, tendons, muscles, bones, discs, and nerves in your neck may not be as healthy as possible and therefore may also be more likely to become strained or injured. It's worth noting, however, that a vast majority of these causes and risk factors are preventable.

Chiropractic Neck Pain Treatment in Birmingham--What to Expect

People who visit our office for neck pain treatment should expect to undergo a thorough physical examination including a posture analysis. We'll also ask you about your recent health history and your activities of daily life. Based on the results of our examination, we'll devise a customized treatment plan to relieve your symptoms, reduce inflammation, restore normal cervical motion, promote tissue healing, and ultimately prevent your neck pain from reoccurring.

Helpful techniques may include spinal adjustments, massage therapy, acoustic compression therapy, and other chiropractic care services.
